NASO Member survey

The National Association of Sports Officials recently completed a comprehensive membership survey that drew more than 2,200 total responses across group and individual surveys, offering one of the most detailed snapshots of today’s officiating landscape in recent years.

The data confirms that NASO’s membership remains deeply engaged in active officiating. More than 94% of respondents indicated they are currently working as sports officials, including those whose sports are simply out of season. Officials are also highly experienced: nearly 74% report officiating for 16 years or more, with more than one-quarter having 41-plus years in the profession.

Survey results highlight the multi-sport nature of today’s officials. While many respondents work a single sport, more than half officiate two or more sports, underscoring the versatility and time commitment required across the industry. Football, baseball, basketball and softball remain the most commonly officiated sports. However, respondents reported involvement in more than two dozen sports overall — from volleyball and soccer to rowing, rugby, and pickleball.

At the competition level, NASO members are most active at the high school varsity level (90%), followed by sub-varsity, youth, and small-college assignments. More than 30% of the respondents also work adult recreational leagues, while a notable number officiate at the major college, professional, and international levels.

The survey also reinforced NASO’s long-standing connection to Referee magazine and grassroots officiating networks. A majority of respondents said they first learned about NASO through a local association or a fellow official, while Referee magazine remains one of the most frequently cited entry points to NASO membership.

“The Membership Survey helps guide future thinking,” NASO President Bill Topp said. “It reinforces what our members want, shows us what we are doing well and identifies areas of improvement. Understanding our membership is the foundation of being an impactful, service-oriented, nonprofit association. We thank those who used their collective voice to help us.”

The results were reviewed in greater detail during the Strategic Development Committee meeting in February, where NASO leadership shapes future priorities, services, and member benefits. NASO officials emphasized that the survey is part of an ongoing effort to listen, adapt, and strengthen the organization in support of officials at every level of the game.
