NASO to Host the Sports Officiating Summit

RACINE, Wis. — The 2009 Sports Officiating Summit, presented by the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) in cooperation with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), will be held July 26-28 at the J.W. Marriott Starr Pass Resort in Tucson, Ariz. The theme for the 27th annual premier event for officiating leaders of all levels and sports is Judgment and Decision Making: How Officiating Leaders Make Great Calls.

NASO Summit sessions will cover the tough decisions leaders have to make, the impact of officials on sportsmanship, legal issues, video and more. The Summit Opening, featuring 2009 Super Bowl referee Terry McAulay will be held on Sunday, July 26, at 7 p.m. Ron Johnson, NBA senior vice president of referee operations, will kick off the educational sessions the next day, Monday, July 27, at 8 a.m.

Some of the leaders scheduled to participate in other sessions include: John Adams, NCAA national coordinator for men’s basketball officiating; Alan Goldberger, sports law attorney and official who wrote Sports Officiating: A Legal Guide; NFL referees Mike Carey and Ed Hochuli; NBA officials Steve Javie and Violet Palmer; Sandra Hunt, FIFA and U.S. Soccer instructor and assessor; Bob Kanaby, NFHS executive director; Barry Mano, NASO president and Referee magazine publisher; and Stephen Walkom, vice-president and director of officiating for the NHL and former NHL referee.

Attendance cost for the NASO Summit is $425 for NASO members and $525 for non-members. There is no charge to media with proper credentials. Media must register at NASO’s registration desk at the J.W. Marriott Starr Pass Resort.
