BASKETBALL – Chris Chavers, a West Virginia Wesleyan College assistant men’s basketball coach, was criminally charged for allegedly hitting a referee following a 92-90 overtime loss to Salem International University Jan. 8, 2005. Chavers faces a charge of battery of an athletic official for the incident. West Virginia Wesleyan College also suspended Chavers for the remainder of the 2004-05 season.

Chavers, 36, allegedly confronted and punched game official George Pack, 59, of Pratt, W.Va., following the game. Pack and fellow game official Andre Langlois, 29, filed complaints with the Buckhannon Police Department following the incident. According to reports, Langlois was hit when trying to break up the fight.
