2003

BASEBALL – A disagreement with an umpire’s call escalated into a baseball brawl between teams from East Cobb County, Ga., and Montgomery, Ala. The incident happened during a June 22, 2003, game. Police had to be called to the scene, and when it was all over, five adults and five 15-year-old players were arrested. According to Guerry Baldwin, East Cobb Baseball president, an umpire was shoved after he called an East Cobb player safe in a close play at second base. And then a fight started from there. Anthony Dye, Marietta, Ga.; Veronica Jefferson, Smiths, Ala.; Brad Blakey, Alpharetta, Ga.; and Ray Ogle, Opelika, Ala.; were charged with public affray, and David Swanson, Woodstock, Ga., was charged with battery. Four of the juveniles face charges of public affray as well and one was charged with aggravated assault.

2000

WRESTLING - After announcing to fellow spectators, "If my kid loses, I'm going after an official," a 46-year-old man made good on his threat and slugged a high school wrestling referee, during the Area 2 Class AAA team tournament, in Troup, rendering him unconscious for about 10 minutes. The assailant is facing up to four misdemeanor accounts. (2000)

1988

SOFTBALL - A softball umpire of Garden City was awarded a $1,300 settlement after being attacked by a player following the game. The player plead guilty to simple battery and was fined. (11/88)
