NBA referee Tre Maddox understands the expectations that he faces in his job.

"I have a motto that I live by, which is, 'I don't referee to be perfect; I referee to be excellent.' " Maddox, 45, said in a story in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "Basically, it means that we're all human, that we are going to make mistakes. Obviously, you try to be the best you can be every night. You try to be consistent in your performance."

Maddox, like all NBA referees, work knowing they have the support and protection of NASO. All NBA referees are members of NASO through the group membership program.
