Portland to Host 2012 Sports Officiating Summit
Dec. 20, 2011 — The 2012 Sports Officiating Summit will be held July 28-30 in Portland, Ore., at the Downtown Marriott Waterfront.
The theme for the 30th NASO Summit is “Taking Care of Business: Reliability and Results in Officiating.”
For officials, taking care of business involves both action on the playing field or court and doing the right things on the sidelines as well.
“The theme for the 2012 Sports Officiating Summit was chosen in order that new ground will be broken,” said NASO President Barry Mano. “For a number of years, we at NASO have felt that a more business-like approach to officiating, both the practice and administration of, would help to raise officiating to new and necessary levels. The sports environment today demands a level of performance, accountability and consistency that makes the old way of doing things practically obsolete.”
It will be the 13th consecutive summit that has had a theme on which the educational sessions are focused. Some of the most recent themes have been: “Officiating to a Standard,” “Judgment and Decision Making,” “Rights, Requirements, Risks,” and “Image in Officiating.”
"We feel the NASO Summit, which serves as the Industry Event of the Year in officiating, needs to take the leaders and practitioners to new and somewhat uncharted places,” Mano said. “This process of exploration and education will, at times, be painful. Yet we believe that the end result will be officiating and officials being demonstrably better.”
