Clougherty Elected Vice Chair of NASO
(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) — John Clougherty, Raleigh, N.C., was elected vice-chair to the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) Board of Directors June 22. The announcement was made following the semi-annual board of directors meeting conducted in Colorado Springs.

Clougherty is an accomplished NCAA Division I basketball official. He is affiliated with the Southeastern, Big East, and Atlantic 10 conferences and Conference USA. He has worked 11 Final Four games including four NCAA men’s basketball championship games.

"It is an honor to serve on the board of the nation’s only organization committed to improving officiating at all levels," said Clougherty. "Those who have served before me have left an awesome responsibility that I embrace fully."

Clougherty is an investment vice president for J.C. Bradford & Company in Raleigh. He is married and the father of three sons.

In addition to his NCAA assignments, Clougherty has worked the National Sports Festival and several international basketball tournaments including, the Central American Games and the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Clougherty earned his master’s in education from Kent State University in 1969 after having attained his bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University in 1968.

He has received numerous awards, including the James Naismith Award as the outstanding collegiate basketball official in 1989. He was inducted into Youngstown State Hall of Fame in 1989.

NASO is a voluntary membership, not-for-profit, educational association working to improve the skills and conditions for sports officials of all levels. Membership is worldwide and includes officials in virtually every sport and at all levels from youth leagues to the professional ranks.
