Rankin Re-Elected NASO Secretary
(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) — Carter Rankin, Hayward, Calif., was re-elected secretary for the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) Board of Directors at the organization’s semi-annual meeting June 22.

Rankin is the former coordinator of women’s basketball officials for the Pac-10 Conference. In that role he was responsible for the selection and evaluation of basketball officials; assigning officials to all Pac-10 contests; training of officials and observers; maintaining a dialogue with coaches and senior women’s administrators; and collaborating with coordinators from other college conferences. He is also a former member of the NCAA officiating manual committee.

"My previous years on the board have been very rewarding and serving with NASO is truly an honor," said Rankin. "We have many new and exciting challenges ahead. It’s truly a privilege to be able to see how NASO can impact the future of officiating."

Rankin began officiating basketball in 1967, working boys’ and girls’ high school, community college and NCAA Division II and III college games. He advanced to men’s NCAA Division I ball in 1970 by working for the Pac-10 and the Western Collegiate conferences and the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (now known as the Big West Conference) until 1984. In 1986, he began working women’s NCAA Division I games for the Pac-10 and the Western Collegiate conferences.

In addition to his officiating duties, Rankin also served as an observer for the Pac-10’s men’s and women’s officials from 1984-92.

Since 1980, Rankin has served as a supervisor and coordinator of officials for the Bay Area Basketball Officials, Inc., in Hayward. He trains and evaluates the assigned officials and conducts basketball clinics for officials throughout California.

NASO is a voluntary membership, not-for-profit, educational association working to improve the skills and conditions for sports officials of all levels. Membership is worldwide and includes officials in virtually every sport and at all levels from youth leagues to the professional ranks.
