- Cashion Re-Elected NASO Treasurer
(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) Red Cashion, College Station, Tex., was re-elected treasurer of the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) Board of Directors during the organizations semi-annual meeting today.
Known around the world for his famous "First dowwwwwn!" call during a 25-year career as an NFL referee, Cashion was initially elected to the 11-member board in 1997 and re-elected in 1999. He will serve until July 2001.
Cashion is chairman emeritus of Anco Corporation, an insurance agency headquartered in the Bryan/College Station area. He began his officiating career in 1952 during his senior year at Texas A&M, working high school games. After a successful collegiate officiating stint, Cashion joined the NFL staff in 1972 and officiated more than 500 professional games, including two Super Bowls, 18 playoff games and one Pro Bowl. He is a former president of the NFL Referees Association (formerly the Professional Football Referees Association.)
NASO is a voluntary membership, not-for-profit, educational association working to improve the skills and conditions for sports officials of all levels. Membership is worldwide and includes officials in virtually every sport and at all levels from youth leagues to the professional ranks.
The organization is headquartered in Racine, Wis.
