Referee Names the Most Influential in Officiating RACINE, Wis. — Who are the most influential figures in officiating history? Who made officiating what it is today? Referee magazine names the 52 who shaped the industry in its latest feature, “They Made Officiating.” There have been a lot of people who have made an impact on the officiating industry throughout its history, but Referee reveals the “most influential” in the November 2007 issue of the magazine. Some of those selected include: Darell Garretson, former NBA official and supervisor of officials; Doug Harvey, former major league umpire who worked five World Series; the late Cal Lepore, who was instrumental in introducing instant replay as an officiating tool; Arthur Mercante Sr., the dean of boxing referees worldwide; the late Dr. Lloyd Olds, who designed and wore the first officiating striped shirt; and Violet Palmer, NBA referee, who has helped to break down color and gender barriers in officiating. Those and many more who made the list were chosen because they influenced what officials know and believe, how they carry out their responsibilities and how they view themselves. Some made it possible for officials to live “expanded lives” and others shaped the institutions of officiating. All were adjudged to have been, or to be, influential more so than famous. To help compile the list, Referee editors asked the officiating directors in all the major sports for their input. Referee consulted those who were a sure-bet to make the final list as well as those who weren’t among the elite but knew officiating as writers or historians. After months of discussion and feedback, the final “most influential” list (below) was put together by the Referee editors. Referee magazine, part of the Referee Enterprises Inc. (REI) family of sports-oriented publications, is a monthly publication for and about sports officials. To request a copy of “They Made Officiating,” contact REI at 262/632-8855 or editor@referee.com.
