Florida legislature nearing decision to enact law aimed at stopping violent attacks on sports officials (RACINE, Wis.) A three-year effort to enact legislation protecting sports officials will face final scrutiny when the Florida legislature opens on March 2. Representative Eleanor Sobel, (D-Hollywood), continued her strong advocacy for youth sports at the state capital last week at a meeting of the Committee on Public Safety and Crime Prevention. The Committee unanimously approved a bill that would increase the penalties for anyone who physically attacks a sports official. "Unfortunately, theres been an alarming increase in the number of assaults on umpires officiating at sports events," Sobel said. "Most recreational and high school games dont have security present. Emotions run high at these games and the violence can be intense. The physical attacks are tragic; the fact that they occur within full view of the youngsters watching and participating in the event makes it all the more tragic." "Its a compound problem," Sobel elaborated. "These unresolved safety issues have thinned the ranks of umpires and referees. As a result, sports events are being canceled. Were losing a major avenue of healthy, physical recreation for these kids at a time when youth and adult obesity is the subject of national headlines. Additionally, many of the umpires and referees are seniors. Children and the elderly thus suffer the most." The new legislation, which is co-sponsored by Larry Cretul (R-Gainesville), calls for a recommended punishment of up to three years in jail and/or a fine of up to $10,000. "Its a tough law, but now is the time to get tough with these offenders," Sobel stated. NASO members in Florida are encouraged to contact their legislators and voice support for House Bill 123 and Senate Bill 678. If passed, Florida would become the 18th state to enact legislation specifically addressing the need to provide protection for sports officials. Last year Texas and Illinois enacted legislation that protects sports officials from physical abuse.
